The Brooklyn Nets received a major boost to their backcourt on Monday as they won the Goran Dragic sweepstakes. While the Slovenian was garnering interest from a number of different teams including the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers, there are a couple of reasons, in particular, he ultimately decided to sign with the Nets.

Via Michael Scotto of HoopsHype:

Dragic’s decision came down to his personal relationship with Steve Nash, who mentored him in Phoenix. I’m told the opportunity to play with such elite talent in Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons appealed to Dragic. He’s viewed as the pure point guard they need. Nash met with Dragic in Miami on Saturday. Sean Marks was there as well. I’m told Nash outlined his plan for Dragic and how he’ll fit in with the Nets during that meeting. I’m told there was no specific promise in terms of playing time, but there is an understanding there between the two men that he’ll be an important piece of that team.

That's honestly no surprise. Dragic was a young player at the time on the Phoenix Suns when Steve Nash was leading the charge. Being able to now play for one of your ex-teammates who is a Hall of Famer is an opportunity that Dragic couldn't pass up.

Also, despite trading away James Harden, the Nets are still a contender in the East. With a trio of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and the newly-acquired Ben Simmons, Brooklyn has a dynamic trio who can do serious damage. Add Dragic into the equation, whether it's in a starting or bench role, and the Nets become that much better.

Scotto also noted the veteran PG would've signed with either the Bucks or Clippers if it wasn't for his close relationship with Nash. The former Miami Heat guard even met with the aforementioned teams before making his decision to join the Nets.
