Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa entered the 2019 season as the presumptive No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Tua Tagovailoa improved on a dominant sophomore campaign in his first nine games, throwing for 2,840 yards and 33 touchdowns (against just three interceptions) while also completing over 71 percent of his passes.

But Tua Tagovailoa suffered a devastating hip injury against Mississippi State in November, sidelining him for the remainder of the season and rendering his status unknown for the draft.

Tom Pelissero of NFL.com reported Tua Tagovailoa will not be ready for workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine, but he plans to hold a personal pro day:

How's the medical report? It's not just the hip Tua Tagovailoa dislocated Nov. 16 at Mississippi State, ending his junior season. Tagovailoa also has had “tightrope” surgery on both his ankles — the left in December 2018 and the right last October. He also had surgery for a broken index finger on his left (throwing) hand last March and played through a knee injury last October.

“It's all (about) durability,” an AFC scout said. “Durability and just the play style, because obviously, he's ultra-instinctive, just a gamer. The problem is the injury history.” The combine will provide the first opportunity for NFL doctors to examine Tua Tagovailoa, who won't be ready to work out in Indy but intends to hold a personal pro day before the draft. So, while all signs are good so far, each team — with its own doctors, and its own level of risk tolerance — will be able to come to its own conclusions about how well Tagovailoa's hip will hold up, whether there are long-term risks such as arthritis, etc.

The Tua Tagovailoa hip injury might hurt his draft stock, though most mocks still have going somewhere in the top 10 picks.

There were previously rumblings about the Detroit Lions selecting Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 3 overall pick in the event they could trade Matthew Stafford, but it appears they will instead field calls for the pick itself.

For better or worse, all eyes will certainly be on Tua Tagovailoa, measuring his technique and mobility during his pro day.
