Wide receiver Rishard Matthews announced his retirement from the NFL just two days after he was released by the New Orleans Saints with a designation of “left team.” He had signed a one year deal with the Saints in June but has decided that he doesn't want play in the NFL anymore.

Matthews posted on Instagram a series of pictures with a title of “no longer exist.” He provided the following caption with the post:

Rishard Matthews the football player No Longer Exist & it’s okay. In life regardless of the right or wrong decisions I’ve made. I’ve always moved forward with the understanding that regardless of what I’m going through someone is going through something a shit ton worse than my bull shit. For athletes it’s important to understand & Move the fuck on. One of the Greatest Coaches I’ve been around Coach Rizzi used to say when it’s time to make a play in sports. You think people give a f*** that your tired or hurt. F*** NO. Apply that to life. Whatever happens. There’s another day & plenty others after that. Move the f*** on No Body Gives A f*** about You Or your problems.”

Matthews was the top receiver for the Tennessee Titans in 2016 and 2017, but he asked for a release after he was given a diminished role. He hoped to find a bigger role on the New York Jets last season but only played eight games with them, catching five passes.

With the Saints during training camp, Matthews was with the reserves and it wasn't a guarantee that he would make the roster. It's unclear if that played into his decision, but it's clear from his Instagram post that he is ready to do something else with his life.
