The Las Vegas Raiders are certainly not taking Jon Gruden's leaked racist email lightly. While it was reportedly made years before Gruden took over as head coach of the franchise, it's simply something the team can't tolerate.

In a statement released after the news dropped, the Raiders condemned Gruden's actions and vowed to investigate the matter. The team also noted that it is already working with Gruden to address the issue.

For those not in the know, Gruden's alleged email from 2011 surfaced after a Wall Street Journal report unearthed the said message. In the email, which Gruden sent to then Washington Redskins GM Bruce Allen, the Raiders coach described NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith with a racist trope.

Per the report, Gruden wrote: “Dumboriss Smith has lips the size of michellin tires”–in reference to an old racist stereotypes of Black people.

“The content of an email regarding DeMaurice Smith from Jon Gruden when he worked for ESPN 10 years ago is disturbing and not what the Raiders stand for,” the team said in the statement released Friday.

“We were first made aware of the email late yesterday by a reporter and are reviewing it along with other materials provided to us today by the NFL. We are addressing the matter with Coach Gruden and will have no further comment at this time.”

Jon Gruden has already apologized for what he said, though he mentioned he has no memory of writing the said email. Still, he expressed his remorse and noted his frustration at the time over the terms of the NFL lockout.

Meanwhile, the league has earlier issued a statement denouncing the email from the Raiders coach, calling it “appalling, abhorrent and wholly contrary to the NFL’s values.”
