Back in 2020 when COVID-19 took the world by storm, companies all across the country and the world were looking for how to cut costs knowing that productivity would come to a halt. That was true in the world of sports as well. It was reported that National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell forfeited his salary for that year, in an attempt to show leadership for team owners and the business world alike.

Well, as it turns out, that was all a sham. The way Goodell's contract is structured is so that he earns the majority of it in bonuses. At the end of the 2020 year, Goodell earned $63.9 million. That's the same exact amount he earned the year prior as commissioner, as noted by The Athletic's Daniel Kaplan.

It stands to reason that the NFL owners were willing to give Roger Goodell the massive bonus to equal that of whatever he gave up. After all, Goodell was able to create shortcuts to help the owners tighten their belts during the pandemic.

But Roger Goodell is not the only one to give himself a big PR boost. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan did the same thing. He forfeited his salary that year, only to earn $14.1 million in bonuses. It was actually the most money he had ever earned in a single year.

If Goodell, Monahan, or any other figure head of an organization wonders why the public has dislike for them, all they have to do is look at their own decision-making.
