Tony Romo has had quite the debut year in the broadcasting booth. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback seamlessly traded in his helmet for a microphone as he instantly became the top color analyst calling the NFL.

Unsurprisingly, Romo has been recognized for his outstanding performances by earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sports Personality/Analyst.

Romo joins fellow NFL color analyst (and new Oakland Raiders head coach) Jon Gruden, college football analysts Gary Danielson and Kirk Herbstreit, and MLB analyst John Smoltz on the five-man nomination list.

Romo was a breath of fresh air in his first year as an NFL commentator. His ability to communicate all the complex football plays still fresh from his NFL quarterback mind in a lively and enthusiastic manner quickly endeared him to many NFL viewers. While he got some stick for his performance during the playoffs, most notably the Super Bowl, his season as a whole should be considered a success.

One could even argue that Romo’s massive success has sparked more interest in players heading straight from the field to the broadcasting booth. Jason Witten and Greg Olsen are two notable players who could follow in Romo’s footsteps shortly after calling time on their playing careers.

As for Romo’s chances of winning the award, they should be fairly high. Apart from being the freshest name in that five-man group, his work has also been far and away the most highly publicized. It should be considered a significant upset if he doesn’t end up taking home the Emmy.
