Cam Newton could be in a tough position.

That’s because, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Newton is still focused on getting a starting quarterback job in the NFL and does not want to be a mentor to a younger one.

“For what it’s worth, Newton has told people that he’s not looking to go to a place as a firm No. 2 or in a mentoring type of role for a younger quarterback—and for obvious reasons,” Breer said in a mailbag article, answering questions from fans.

“He still believes he can play, and that he is a starter. And as such, he’s willing to wait for the right opportunity, which makes his signing date pretty unpredictable. Given the landscape across the NFL right now, the most likely path to finding that shot is through something going haywire (via injury or a QB not developing as expected) somewhere else. That means the chances that Newton chooses to remain untethered through the start of camp are actually fairly good.”

This year in particular makes Newton’s hope to get a starting job that much harder as a result of the coronavirus.

With Newton, 31, coming off an injury, teams will be cautious deciding to pick him up for what he is asking for without being able to bring him in for a physical and drills. Newton’s best hope is for a team that does not have a clear-cut No. 1 going into training camp to bring him in and test him out.

Newton is fighting an uphill battle, however, with not only the coronavirus, but also the addition of Colin Kaepernick back into the mix, along with a limited number of teams with quarterback questions, limiting heavily on where the ninth-year pro can go.

Another issue both Newton and Kaepernick have to contend with are their styles, as most teams would have to completely rewrite their playbooks in order to accommodate the read-option style both athletic quarterbacks are most suited to run.

Newton certainly still has the ability to play in the NFL. Whether he will get an opportunity to prove that in 2020 is still up in the air.
