Why The Lions Could Cover the Spread

The Lions made an unlikely comeback after trailing by as many as 28 points before falling 41-33 to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1. Head coach Dan Campbell and quarterback Jared Goff both made their debuts for the Lions and they were solid.

On Monday night, running back Jamaal Williams will return to Lambeau Field, where he played for Green Bay from 2017-20. He will team up with second-year running back D’Andre Swift, who caught eight passes for 65 yards and a touchdown in the opener.

Detroit outscored San Francisco 23-10 in the second half of their game and showed a lot of resilience in their almost completed comeback. In their last eight Monday games, the Lions have a 6-2 record against the spread. Furthermore, in their previous eight meetings against the Packers, the Lions are 7-1 against the spread.

Why The Packers Could Cover the Spread

For Aaron Rodgers and all the drama surrounding him in the offseason, his first game of the season was a disaster. The Packers lost 38-3, allowing the Saints to total 322 yards and accumulate 22 first downs. The Packers' offense finished with 186 total yards and three turnovers. New Orleans controlled the clock as well, totaling 34:36 in the time of possession category.

This opening loss does not define who Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are by any means, as they will put their opening loss behind them and bounce back at home.

The Packers have gone 9-2 in Rodgers’ 11 home starts against the Lions. He has thrown 21 touchdown passes with only four interceptions in those games. Luckily, Rodgers will be facing a depleted Lions secondary after losing starting cornerback Jeff Okudah for the season to a ruptured Achilles tendon. As a result, expect Davante Adams to have a monster game on Monday night.

Last season, the Lions ranked last in the NFL in points allowed per game, yards allowed per game, and yards allowed per play. Green Bay's offense should feast.

Final Lions-Packers Prediction and Pick

The Green Bay Packers are much better than what they showed in the opener and should bounce back at Lambeau Field. The Lions allowed for Jimmy Garoppolo to put up 314 yards through the air, and now without their best cornerback and depleted secondary, imagine what an angry Aaron Rodgers will do to them.

However, it is early in the season, and the Lions have a new identity with Jared Goff. Detroit showed that they could be resilient and score quickly when needed. The Packers are just 1-6 against the spread in their last seven games as double-digit favorites. The line is a bit too high after what we saw out of Rodgers and his demeanor on Sunday. Take the points with the Lions and expect Green Bay to win by a touchdown.
