Jadeveon Clowney was widely considered one of the best edge rushers hitting the open market entering free agency, and he expected to receiver a massive payday as a result.

But it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Clowney has been anticipating a Khalil Mack or Aaron Donald type of contract, but Garafolo says that Clowney isn't getting those types of offers at this point.

He adds that the Seattle Seahawks, with whom Clowney spent the 2019 campaign, have made Clowney an offer that is a “tier below” the deals of Mack and Donald and that Clowney may have to just accept the best deal he is going to get.

It's not hard to understand why Jadeveon Clowney is not getting Mack or Donald money.

Unlike Mack and Donald, who have generally always been among the NFL leaders in sacks year in and year out, Clowney has never registered a double-digit sack season since entering the league with the Houston Texans in 2014, and he is coming off of a year in which he totaled just three sacks for the Seahawks.

The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of South Carolina, was originally selected by the Texans with the first overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Injuries limited him to just four games during his rookie campaign, and in his second season, Clowney was disappointing, posting 40 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

He proceeded to make three straight Pro Bowls between 2016 and 2018, topping out at 9.5 sacks in 2017.

Houston traded Clowney to Seattle shortly before the start of this past season.
