Twelve teams now remain.
Now that the Philadelphia Eagles know what it feels like to kiss the Vince Lombardi Trophy, only 12 NFL franchises remain championship-less as it pertains to the Super Bowl era. Often, the casual narrative tends to omit NFL history prior to the Super Bowl. It's madness.
In fact, there have been almost as many NFL Champions (49, 1920-1769 in this league as Super Bowl champs (52, 1966-2017). Up until Super Bowl 50, the quantity of NFL champs always outnumbered Lombardi trophies earned. Therefore, many of the teams on the following list really do receive unfair takes from a historical point of view.
The 12 teams still in search of a Super Bowl win:
- Cincinnati Bengals
- Buffalo Bills
- Cleveland Browns
- Arizona Cardinals
- Los Angeles Chargers
- Atlanta Falcons
- Jacksonville Jaguars
- Detroit Lions
- Carolina Panthers
- Houston Texans
- Tennessee Titans
- Minnesota Vikings

Of the 12, eight have played in a Super Bowl. This means only four have never reached the big game (Browns, Jaguars, Lions, Texans).
Article Continues BelowWorse yet, both the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings have been there four times. The Bills, of course, fell four straight times in the early 1990s while the Vikings did their losing during the decade of the 1970s.
In what area is this not fair? Just take a look at Cleveland Browns history. The franchise, coming from the All-America Football Conference, demonstrated what the first football powerhouse at the professional level was all about. They do own three NFL championships but more impressively, the team won four AAFC titles.
In fact, from 1946 through 1955, the franchise took home seven titles in 10 combined AAFC/NFL seasons while appearing in the championship game 11 straight years (tacking on the 1956 season). They represent football's first true dynasty, yet haven't even been to the Super Bowl.
Both the Vikings and Jaguars appeared on Championship Sunday in 2017 while the Falcons were as close to a title as humanly possible a season ago, so progress is being made.
Twelve remain.
