Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson had a decent season in 2018. After missing virtually all of 2017 with a wrist injury, Johnson had 1,386 total yards and 10 total touchdowns in 16 games and was one of the bright spots in what was a disappointing season for the Cardinals.

However, Johnson was still a far cry from where he was pre-injury in 2016, when he had over 2,000 yards from scrimmage with 20 total touchdowns as he made First-Team All-Pro.

But Johnson believes that under new head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s offensive system, this will be the year he returns to that elite level.

“I think it’ll be similar to 2016,” Johnson said per Darren Urban of the team’s official website.

Johnson expects to be used both as a runner and a receiver in Kingsbury’s system and that he’ll get more opportunities to score than last year.

With the Cardinals set to start with No. 1 pick Kyler Murray at quarterback, it would make sense that Johnson would get a good number of touches to take the pressure off the rookie.

Moreover, the Cardinals don’t exactly have a wide array of reliable weapons at the skill positions, particularly at receiver. Aside from Larry Fitzgerald, Johnson is just about the next best receiver on the team, which isn’t a great sign for the team overall.

However, it could turn out to be just what Johnson is hoping for in terms of getting the lion’s share of touches in the Cardinals’ offense.
