Jordan Hicks believes there are similarities between this year’s Cardinals team and his former Philadelphia Eagles team that won the Super Bowl in 2018.
“It’s eerily similar of a situation that we’re going into,” Hicks said in a video conference call with the media on Thursday per USA Today’s CardsWire. “The year before I won the Super Bowl in Philadelphia, we had a rookie head coach and rookie quarterback. We had our highs and our lows. As a defense, we didn’t know what our identity was. Very similar, but we got better as the season went along, very similar to what you saw with us this last season.”
Of course, comparing the two teams is easy to do in the preseason. Especially before any training or practicing has occurred due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. But the Cardinals linebacker simply wants to point out the similar situation that both teams found themselves in after one season and heading into the next.
The Cardinals have had an active offseason so far, perhaps backing up Hicks’s claims. They made a splashy trade to obtain DeAndre Hopkins and re-signed Kenyan Drake, Larry Fitzgerald and D.J. Humphries. The team also added defensive starters Jordan Phillips, Devon Kennard and De’Vondre Campbell.
Hicks had a career year in his first season with the Cardinals. The 27-year-old produced a career-high 150 total combined tackles, including 93 solo tackles. His solo number of tackles ranked fifth in the entire NFL.
Only time will tell if Hicks’s statements come to pass, but the Cardinals are certainly an up-and-coming contender in the league.
