Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak has likely taken himself out of the running for the Arizona Cardinals’ head coaching job after he declined a second interview with the team, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
Munchak and Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo were reportedly two of the candidates the Cardinals planned on talking to again.
Munchak has been the Steelers’ offensive line coach since 2014. Prior to that, he served as the Tennessee Titans head coach and recorded a 22-26 record in three seasons in charge. The Steelers just got rid of offensive coordinator Todd Haley, and while quarterbacks coach Randy Fichter is considered the early favorite for the job, Munchak could also emerge as a candidate for the vacancy.

Arizona went 8-8 in 2017 as star running back David Johnson missed virtually the entire season with a wrist injury. Meanwhile, quarterback Carson Palmer was limited to just seven games after suffering a season-ending broken arm.
While Munchak has declined a second interview with the team, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that “as of now,” DeFilippo is set to have his second interview with the team next week.
Meanwhile, Mortensen also reports that with Munchak bowing out, New England Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores is now in play for the Cardinals’ head coaching job. Flores, 36, is a Patriots lifer who has steadily risen through the ranks as a defensive coach since joining the team in 2004.
