The Denver Broncos made headlines with the acquisition of former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. It appears they have no intention of making any changes to his contract either.
The veteran is set to make $18.5 million for the 2019 NFL season. According to Mike Klis of 9News, the Broncos will pay every cent of it:
Broncos will not re-do Flacco's contract. Flacco to make $18.5 million 2019 (10th among QBs in cash now, before FA and first-rounders get their bonuses), $20.25 million in 2020; $24.25 million. None of it guaranteed but Broncos hope to pay every cent.
It is safe to say that the deal for Flacco has come with its fair share of mixed reviews. There is plenty of speculation regarding whether or not he is a better option than quarterback Case Keenum. Now the recent update on his contract situation has brought further criticism. There is no question that Flacco has underwhelmed over the last several years. His failure to ignite a spark in Baltimore's lackluster offense is ultimately the reason why he lost his job to a dynamic, young quarterback in Lamar Jackson.
Regardless, the current market in the NFL is set up to pay quarterbacks far more than what most are actually worth. Flacco is hardly the only beneficiary of this recent trend. That said, the $18.5 million may not prove to be as steep if the veteran can piece together or serviceable year with the Broncos. He is certainly entering an ideal environment for a potential resurgence for a Broncos offense that boasts some promising, young talent.
