The Baltimore Ravens didn't live up to expectations in 2021, as an injury-riddled season saw them fall short of the playoffs. The team will be back in 2022 looking to make some significant improvements, and they've already got to work on tweaking the coaching staff. After firing defensive coordinator Don Martindale over the weekend, the Ravens are reportedly nearing an extension with longtime head coach John Harbaugh, per ESPN's Jamison Hensley.

Harbaugh is one of the longest-tenured active head coaches in the NFL, having been with the Ravens since 2008. The Ravens extended Harbaugh's contract back in 2019 on a new four-year deal, which would be set to expire after the 2022 campaign. Rather than keep Harbaugh coaching on an expiring contract, GM Eric DeCosta opted to offer an extension to the 59-year-old.

Harbaugh's extension is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, per Henley, and should keep him in town for the foreseeable future.

Across 14 seasons as the Ravens head coach, Harbaugh has amassed a 137-88 record. He coached the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory in 2012 and has made the playoffs in nine of his 14 years at the helm in Baltimore. Prior to landing with the Ravens, Harbaugh had served as the Special Teams Coordinator for the Cincinnati Bearcats from 1989-1996. He held the same position with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1998-2006, before earning a promotion to defensive backs coach in 2007, and subsequently joining the Ravens.

After parting ways with Martindale following the Ravens' disappointing 2021 season, locking down Harbaugh to a new deal became a priority for the organization, who wanted to erase any doubts about Harbaugh's future with the franchise.
