The Baltimore Ravens are in desperate need of help in the passing game, and they certainly got some assistance on Thursday night, taking University of Oklahoma wide receiver Marquise Brown with the 25th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.
The Ravens actually traded back from No. 22, picking up a couple of extra picks from the Philadelphia Eagles in the process, but in doing so, general manager Eric DeCosta became worried that Brown would be off the board by the time Baltimore was on the clock at No. 25.
More specifically, DeCosta was worried that the very same Eagles with whom he traded would nab Brown at No. 22.
“To be honest, I was a little bit nervous that Philly might take [Brown],” DeCosta said, according to Ryan Mink of the Ravens' official team website. “But it’s a calculated risk. We had some other players there that we liked. We like to make trades. It made sense to gamble, to roll the dice a little bit, so we did.”
The cousin of Oakland Raiders star Antonio Brown, Marquise is considered to be one of the top wide outs in this year's draft class and is coming off of a sophomore campaign in which he hauled in 75 receptions for 1,318 yards an 10 touchdowns.
And the Ravens almost missed out on him.
“You do get to a point where you start to get nervous,” DeCosta said. “You don’t want to be too greedy. We had a chance to make a trade, go back and get the guy that we wanted. From that standpoint, it was great.”
Fortunately for DeCosta, Baltimore got their guy.
