The Baltimore Ravens officially ushered in the Lamar Jackson era after his emergence during the 2018 NFL season. It seems a new playbook has come with it.
The Ravens have made some significant changes to their roster and coaching staff this offseason. According to John Breech of CBS Sports, Jackson was not aware that they would be changing the offense as well.
“Coming in, I didn't know we would have a totally different offense,” Jackson admitted, via the Ravens' official website. “When I got here, coach was like, ‘Yeah, we have a totally new system. You're going to have go through this and that.' It's been getting to me a little bit.”
The fact that Baltimore has switched up the offense should hardly come as any surprise. The previous scheme was centered around the skill set of quarterback Joe Flacco. It is no secret that the offense ultimately grew stagnant under Flacco and the arrival of Jackson helped provide a massive spark for them moving forward. Regardless, the offense eventually faltered down the stretch in their frustrating playoff loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
As a result, the Ravens parted ways with former offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg in favor of Greg Roman this offseason. Roman has since to decided to switch things up entirely to Jackson's surprise. The fact that the young quarterback was so taken back by the discovery is somewhat of a cause for concern since not been shy about expressing his struggles thus far in OTAs.
Jackson will surely need time to find his footing in the new offense. The 22-year-old is poised for a busy offseason when you pair that with his desire to improve all facets of his game.
