Call it a recipe for success. In a recent interview with CNBC, Baltimore Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson revealed what he eats prior to taking the field.

“Shrimp Alfredo, that’s my meal before the game,” said Jackson.

A serving of the Southern dish usually consists of 1,148 calories and provides 24% total carbohydrates for the day. The latter often gets a bad rap when it comes to diet-conscious individuals, but science suggests that athletes, with the Ravens and other teams, should load up on those carbs.

“They’re the most obvious choice [of energy] for your body, your muscles and your brain,” revealed registered dietitian Torey Armul.

Jackson also had his take on the subject at hand. The Ravens have a smart quarterback.

“They say [pasta] helps your brain. I feel like I go out with a level head and I can think.”

In his unanimous MVP campaign last season for the Ravens, Jackson was able to keep his focus on the field by throwing 36 touchdown passes compared to only six interceptions.

Jackson, however, offered a candid response on whether the consumption of his favorite dish before game time has anything to do with on-field success for the Ravens.

“I wouldn’t call it a good luck meal but I guess it is.”

Whatever the case may be, Jackson has compiled a 19-3 record with a passer rating of 104.7 ever since being named as a starter for the Ravens.

Jackson also revealed in the interview that without Ravens practice sessions, he has kept himself busy at home with yoga and pilates in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis.

“[The workouts] relax your muscles and your mind. It lets your mind breathe. It makes life go better. It makes your days better.”
