The Chicago Bears have a laundry-list of issues to resolve in the offseason and running back Jordan Howard is optimistic about their playoff chances in 2018 despite playing to a poor record this past season.
Howard also understands that the team will need to solve one glaring void in order to do so. During an appearance on the NFL Network, he said that the Bears' area of focus this offseason should be surrounding quarterback Mitchell Trubisky with some more talent on the outside, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:
“We’ve got to go after some receivers,” Howard said. “We definitely got to get some receivers to help Mitch. I feel like that’s the part that’s going to complete us. We’ve got the running game down, now we’ve got to get the passing game going. I feel like that will take us over the top. We’ve got a lot of money too. We’ve got a lot of money.”
When the Bears moved up to take Trubisky with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, it came with the expectation that they would have some time to groom him before going under center. However, it quickly became evident that Chicago was in dire need of a spark with quarterback Mike Glennon at the helm. As a result, he started the rest of the year following the first month and largely struggled throughout the season.
Fortunately, Trubisky may have shown some signs of promise with Howard suggesting that all he needs is the right weapons around him. It also goes without saying that more playmakers on the outside mean more running room for Howard in the box.
The former Pro Bowler is the Bears' clear-cut workhorse back moving forward and is hoping Chicago can make a splash in the offseason for both his and Mitchell Trubisky's sake.
