When former All-Pro running back Jamaal Charles joined the Denver Broncos in the offseason, he had high hopes of reigniting his NFL career.
However, it hasn't worked out in the manner that he had hoped as he was not on the active roster for the first time this season for Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins. All of this has hit a boiling point for Charles voicing on Tuesday that he feels that the team should release him if they aren't going to play him, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post.
“I ain’t playing. Might as well,” Charles said Tuesday. “No reason for me to just sit around and look at people play. It is what it is. I’m still going to be supportive of everyone on the team no matter what. I mean, they got my rights right now.”
The 30-year-old has been relegated to essentially being the third running back on the depth chart with 69 carries for 296 yards and 23 catches for 129 yards while playing about 15 snaps per game in the first 14 games of the season. The Broncos have been firmly committed to rolling with C.J. Anderson as the unquestioned starter while working in Devontae Booker as the backup since his return to the lineup.
It has left Charles almost entirely out of the mix for much of the season. He has shown flashes of his Pro Bowl form, but he hasn't been able to capitalize on that in a more expanded role with the Broncos. Instead, he has remained in limited playing time throughout the year.
With Charles on a one-year, $2.5 million deal, it is safe to assume that he will be playing elsewhere next season with eyes on potentially garnering a significant role in the backfield with another team.
