Veteran cornerback Vontae Davis was recently medically cleared from a groin injury that prematurely ended his 2017 campaign and led to the Indianapolis Colts cutting him back in November. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Davis has already begun his free agency process, visiting with the Buffalo Bills on Thursday to kickoff what will likely be a slew of meetings.

Davis spent the last six seasons with the Colts, establishing himself as one of the better cornerbacks in the league while earning a pair of Pro Bowl selections. He had been a major part of their secondary over the duration of his tenure in Indianapolis. Prior to that, Davis played his first three years with the Miami Dolphins.

The 29-year-old saw his time with the Colts come to an abrupt end after there was a disagreement between he and the team about whether the groin injury was severe enough to keep him off the field.

This resulted in the front office deciding to release him in early November and he didn't play another down in the 2017 season.

Davis can now sign with any team he chooses at this point on and is eligible to sign with a team before the new league year starts on March 14. The Bills may be the first of many teams that expresses their interest in acquiring his services.

Buffalo has a pressing need to address their secondary situation with E.J. Gaines, Shareece Wright, and Leonard Johnson all in line to become free agents this upcoming offseason. They struggled against the pass last season, ranking 20th in the league while opposing quarterbacks completed 64.6 percent of their passes against them. The Bills are currently projected to have nearly $30 million at their disposal to spend in free agency and the draft.

Things should pick up on this front for Davis over the next few weeks ahead of free agency, with teams getting a clearer idea of their roster for the 2018 season.
