Fans of the Buffalo Bills held their collective breath after an injury scare to franchise quarterback Josh Allen, who slammed his head against the turf while being tackled during Sunday's game against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium:

Allen was clearly shaken up and was immediately tended to by team medical personnel before eventually making his way off the field under his own power. He was placed in the blue medical tent for evaluation but soon re-emerged.

He's since re-entered the game and doesn't appear to be any worse for wear. According to the latest update from the Bills, Allen was evaluated for a head injury but was cleared:

“Injury Update: Josh Allen was evaluated for a head injury and cleared to return,” the update read.

An injury to Allen would be the last thing the Bills could afford, especially given their strong 3-1 start to the season heading into Sunday’s game against the Texans.

Unfortunately, the Bills now find themselves at 3-2 after a heartbreaking loss, with the Texans sealing the victory on a game-winning field goal as time expired in regulation.

The NFL has garnered controversy from their handling of head injuries in recent years, but Allen explained that his ailment was actually an ankle injury, via USA Today.

“[I took] a big shot to the chest and rolled my ankle there,” Allen explained. “They flagged me for hitting my head but felt good enough to go back in the game.”

Per NFL rules, players are placed into concussion protocol with the following conditions, via USA Today:

  • The team Athletic Trainer, booth ATC spotter, team Physician, NFL game official, coach, teammate, sideline Unaffiliated Neurotrauma Consultant (UNC) or booth UNC initiates the protocol.”
