Chicago Bears starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is currently out and recovering because of a right shoulder injury. The 24-year-old got hurt a few weeks ago after getting hit by Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith as he scrambled for yards.

This caused Trubisky to miss the Bears' Thanksgiving game against the Detroit Lions, and it looks like the second-year signal caller will not play against the New York Giants this weekend. He has been limited in practice and still isn't throwing again.

Smith, meanwhile, made these comments regarding his devastating hit on Trubisky, per Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press:

“It was kind of a tough, quick decision on the play,”  Smith stated.

“I don’t want to see anybody get hurt. I definitely don’t like that,” Smith added.

Smith was fined $10,026 by the league for his hit on Trubisky, but he's appealing the fine.

The NFL recently made adjustments to their rules regarding player safety. They've done so because they want to protect players from unnecessary risks.

On this specific play, Smith made the hit on Trubisky while the quarterback was throwing himself into the ground after rushing for a few yards. Under new league rules, a player is considered to have given up on the play once he slides to the ground. It doesn't have to be a feet-first slide.

This could possibly be used as the basis regarding the decision on Smith's appeal.

The Bears are set to miss Trubisky's services for the second consecutive week. He has passed for 2,469 yards and 20 touchdowns with nine picks so far.

Backup quarterback Chase Daniel is expected to start under center Sunday against the Giants.

The veteran did an impressive job on Thanksgiving versus the Detroit Lions. He passed for 230 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in a 23-16 victory.
