On Wednesday, the Cincinnati Bengals took to Twitter to announce their captains for the 2020 NFL regular season.

A lot of the names were not much of a surprise. They included veteran safeties Shawn Williams and Vonn Bell. Star wide receiver A.J. Green and longtime running back Giovani Bernard were on that list as well.

Veteran linebacker Josh Bynes and the team's punter since 2009 Kevin Huber were also named as captains.

There was one other player though, and this one had a little bit more surprise to it. Quarterback Joe Burrow.

Now, sure, it's not all that shocking to see the starting quarterback on a team to be named a captain. But this is a rookie we are talking about.

Burrow was the first overall pick and is the starter right out of the gate. But it's impressive that his teammates and coaches already respect him so much that he was named a captain.

This would be incredible even in a normal offseason, but this has been far from that. There has been very limited team workouts, and there have been absolutely zero preseason games.

Due to that, the teams have not really had a chance to get to know each other too well. So it seems like common sense to assume that this means the rookies are at a bit of a disadvantage.

However, it appears that is not the case for Burrow. He has made a strong impression on everyone in the organization and he was rewarded with captain honors in his first season.

The expectations are astronomically high for the quarterback's career, and this is about the best possible start he could get off to.

Sure, it has nothing to do with how he is actually going to play on the field—but it shows that he has already earned the respect of his teammates and coaching staff. And that already has to make the Bengals feel like they made the right choice taking him with the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
