The 0-3 Cincinnati Bengals could use a man of A.J. Green's talents. Unfortunately, they won't have their seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver back for Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As Bengals coach Zac Taylor said on Monday, via WKRC:
“No, I don’t expect him to practice this week. I guess that would be the update. He’s still making good progress over there when I’m watching him on the rehab field. I’d really hate to make predictions on what his timeline is, because he is making the progress that we expect him to make. He’s certainly trending in the right direction. I don’t want to give any time table on next week, the week after, or the week after that – I don’t want to do any of that stuff. It’ll be exciting when we do get him back.”
Green suffered ankle injury shortly into 2019 training camp. From there, he underwent surgery. The Bengals didn't place him on injured reserve, however, as the team believed him to be out for six to eight weeks. Later, he mentioned that he expects to be out longer than that timeline.
Nonetheless, Green's return is coming soon, as “he's certainly trending in the right direction,” per Taylor. Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals isn't entirely out of the question. But, considering how impactful he is to their offense, and his recent, troubling, history with foot/ankle injuries, the team will likely wait for him to get two full weeks of practice under his belt. Therefore, Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens looks like a probable return date.
