Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon is coming off a stellar 2018 NFL season. However, it seems he is preparing for an even bigger 2019 campaign.
The offseason is in full swing for NFL players. According to Geoff Hobson of the team website, Mixon is getting ready to handle an even heavier workload next season.
“I’m trying to be in the best shape to be able to handle that load, because it’s not easy,” Mixon said. “I know I could do it. You always have to expect it. Even if it doesn’t happen, you have to always expect it. And I always try to do whatever I can to maximize my ability. I feel like with what I can do, I should be able to do that easily.”
Mixon enjoyed plenty of success in his first season as the Bengals' workhorse back. He finished the 2018 campaign with 1,168 yards and eight touchdowns on 237 carries. The former second-round pick also managed to tack on 43 receptions for 296 yards and a touchdown.
The Bengals have since undergone some substantial changes to their coaching staff. There is good reason for Mixon to be excited about the arrival of head coach Zac Taylor. He spent the previous two years learning under Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay. It is safe to assume he learned the importance of establishing a strong run game during that time with running back Todd Gurley.
Mixon is chomping at the bit at the prospect of taking on a workload like Gurley's moving forward.
