Baker Mayfield got the chance to play with the first team on Thursday night against the Philadelphia Eagles after Tyrod Taylor exited due to a hand injury. But the rookie quarterback wasn’t pleased with how he performed when he was handed that golden opportunity.

Mayfield ran two series with the first team. The first lasted seven plays for 27 yards and ended on a failed fourth down attempt. Mayfield was then sacked on the second drive, which went just three plays for -1 yard and resulted in a 54-yard field goal.

“I would never say it is a good opportunity when our leader and captain goes down but getting out there with the ones, that is something that I need to do,” Mayfield said, via Ohio.com. “I did that, and that is why I am disappointed in myself. I didn’t take advantage.”

Mayfield went on to play three more series in the second half, which resulted in two punts and an interception. He ended the night going 8-of-12 for 76 yards with a pick. After the game, he said he needed to get the ball out quicker and make the right decisions.

Mayfield’s performance against the Eagles is just a sobering reminder that despite the significant hype surrounding the No. 1 overall pick, he is still a rookie who’s bound for these types of underwhelming outings. It also helps justify the Browns’ decision to sit him behind Taylor for at least this season.

Hopefully, Mayfield is able to learn from this disappointment and shows some marked improvement the next time he gets the chance to play with the starters in a game.
