Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski claims quarterback Baker Mayfield had a great week in practice despite not being 100 percent recovered from his bruised ribs.
Mayfield, who was awful in Week 6 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, could be set up to have a bounce-back game in Week 7 versus the lowly Cincinnati Bengals, per Stefanski.
“He’s like a lot of guys: You are healthy but does not mean you are 100 percent,” Kevin Stefanski said about Browns starting QB Baker Mayfield, via Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal.
“You are still feeling it a little bit, and it can be uncomfortable…I think he’s healthy. He’s pushing through it. In Week 7, no one is feeling 100 percent. I have a ton of confidence in him.”
The Browns are 4-2 on the season, but Mayfield has been below-average. He's completing 60.6 percent of his passes and has thrown for 1,095 yards, 10 touchdowns and six picks.
Against the Steelers, Mayfield went 10-of-18 for 119 yards. He threw one touchdown pass but was picked off two times and eventually benched by Stefanski after the game was out of reach for the Browns.
Mayfield better play well against the Bengals. If he doesn't, we could see Case Keenum take over the starting job for good since his best season in the NFL came when Stefanski was his offensive coordinator on the Minnesota Vikings.
Since getting drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in 2018, Mayfield has thrown 59 touchdowns and 41 interceptions. He's only 16-19 as a starter and needs to get his act together quickly.
There have already been rumors about Browns stars Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. being upset in Cleveland. Those reports will only get louder if Mayfield continues to struggle.
