Baker Mayfield is still a Cleveland Brown. Despite all of the discussion, rumors, and drama, Mayfield would suit up for Cleveland if Week 1 started today. However, it does not so Cleveland still has time to deal him away before the season begins. But there is one major dilemma standing in the way of the Browns and a Baker Mayfield trade.
Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reported that an undisclosed team had displayed interest in Mayfield but refused to meet Cleveland's asking price. This has been the common theme from reported discussions revolving around a potential Mayfield deal. A source from the undisclosed team shared the harsh reality of the Browns' situation.
“No one’s trying to do the Browns any favors in this situation.”
Cleveland is not going to get bailed out. And they are in a difficult position right now because they will likely need to end up finding a replacement for Deshaun Watson if his potential suspension is announced prior to the season. Although that could entice Cleveland to keep Mayfield around, the Browns would still rather cut the chord and deal him away at this point.
Baker already requested a trade and both sides could use a fresh start. But the Browns want more than what other teams are offering. Cleveland reportedly wanted a first round pick earlier in the offseason while trade partners don't believe Mayfield is worth that asking price.
The Browns will probably need to settle for less if they are intent on dealing him away. If not, they will either be forced to keep him in the fold or release him.
