When the Cleveland Browns acquired Deshaun Watson from the Texans last week, it signaled the end of Baker Mayfield’s time in Cleveland. The quarterback was once considered the future of the franchise and impressed in 2020, but injuries and underperformance told the story of his 2021 campaign and played a big role in the Browns missing the postseason. While Cleveland may have considered keeping Mayfield in the fold as a backup, the quarterback reportedly felt disrespected by the franchise and ended up asking for a trade before the Browns even officially landed Watson. Once news broke of the trade between Houston and Cleveland, that only led to Mayfield desiring a trade even more.

The Browns are expected to honor his request after initially displaying hesitancy. However, Cleveland is not going to let Mayfield walk away for nothing. The Browns are reportedly asking for a first round pick in return for Baker Mayfield.

But getting a team to send over a first rounder in return for the QB could prove to be difficult. Mayfield threw for just over 3,000 yards and posted a 60.5 quarterback percentage over 14 games. Additionally, he fired 17 touchdown passes compared to 13 interceptions. That is a touchdown-interception ratio that other teams may be weary of.

On the other hand, Mayfield is still just 26 years old and threw 26 touchdowns and only had the ball picked off 8 times in 2020. So if Cleveland receives a first round pick in return for Baker, the team that acquires him will be hoping he can replicate his performance from 2020.

And there is a chance that Mayfield rebounds after undergoing surgery on his torn labrum late in the 2021-2022 season. If he is able to enter the upcoming year at full health, we could see another solid showing from Baker Mayfield.
