The end of the 2017 NFL season could not have come any quicker for the Indianapolis Colts. Their nightmare year ultimately culminated with the firing of head coach Chuck Pagano following the season finale.
The Colts have plenty of issues to address this offseason. However, owner Jim Irsay is confident that the return of franchise quarterback Andrew Luck will help with their search for a new head coach, according to ESPN's Mike Wells:
“Andrew just makes [the job] that much more special and enticing,” Irsay said. “He's coming back. He's coming back. But putting that aside, the great tradition we have, the incredible stadium that we have, we've accomplished things here that are absolutely just remarkable.”
Even prior to the year, there were signs of looming disaster. Luck's uncertain health was magnified by Irsay's empty promises about his return. As a result, they largely served as the catalyst behind all the Colts' problems this season.
That said, it will be hard to take Irsay's comments at face-value considering the inconsistencies he has shown in the past. Regardless, the prospect of Luck's comeback will certainly factor into any coach's decision on whether or not they are willing to accept the task of rebuilding this depleted Colts team.
