Since the NFL made the decision to levy a six-game suspension on Dallas Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliot prior to the 2017 season, there has been ongoing tension between team owner Jerry Jones and league commissioner Roger Goodell. It has lingered on with Jones attempting legal action to prevent Goodell from securing a sizeable extension.
The lack of support from other owners led Jones threatening to sue the members of the compensation committee, which includes owners from the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Houston Texans.
According to Ben Belson of the New York Times, Goodell is set to respond with legal action to get Jones to pay “millions of dollars” for his actions against him and the compensation committee.
With the support of many N.F.L. owners, Commissioner Roger Goodell is prepared to escalate his public feud with Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and long one of the most influential people in the league, by fining him millions of dollars for his efforts to derail negotiations to renew Goodell’s contract and for his outspoken defense of a star player who was suspended, according to five league officials with direct knowledge of the situation.

However, Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network is reporting that is not a fine but rather reimbursement for the team owners on the compensation committee that is expected to total more than $2 million.

Although Jones has stepped down from his strong push from taking legal action against compensation committee, there still lies harsh feelings for how the entire situation involving Elliott transpired. The fact that he was advocating to possibly block the extension for Goodell, even after he dropped his lawsuit, reveals how deep and personal this matter became.
This suddenly heightened pursuit of reimbursement should quickly lead to a response from Jones, who will likely look to avoid having to pay that hefty sum.
It could also inevitably lead to the 75-year-old taking more legal action to push back against the league. More details should come out over the course of this week on this tense situation.
