The Dallas Cowboys and DeMarcus Lawrence are far apart in their contract talks, according to The Athletic's Calvin Watkins.

DeMarcus Lawrence was selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Cowboys. Last season, he recorded 64 tackles, 10.5 sacks, one interception, and two forced fumbles. He is considered to be one of the best pass rushers in the NFL and is expected to be paid like one.

If the sides are far apart as people think, it's possible Lawrence is demanding a contract similar to that of Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald and Chicago Bears game-changer Khalil Mack.

Pro Football Focus gave DeMarcus Lawrence an 88.0 grade in 2018, which ranked ninth among all edge rushers. His ability to rush the passer and be equally as effective against the run makes him one of the best overall players in the NFL.

In the past two years alone, he had 25 sacks and 49 quarterback hits. He also was voted to two consecutive Pro Bowls.

He turns 27 at the end of April and the Cowboys are trying their best to keep him around for the long haul.

The Cowboys have already placed a franchise tag on Lawrence worth $20.57 million. This will give the team until July 15 to negotiate and settle on a long-term deal with its star player.

This situation could be very similar to Le'Veon Bell. If DeMarcus Lawrence does not receive a contract offer he likes, he might not sign the franchise tag offer. He could sit out a good part of the 2019 season until he gets the contract he desires.
