The Dallas Cowboys have quite the debacle with Ezekiel Elliott holding out of training camp. Despite that, the team seems to have their sights set on signing Amari Cooper.
According to Jane Slater of NFL Network, Dallas brass says they'll “get something done” with Amari Cooper “for sure”. Cooper is among a few players on the Cowboys offense that is in need of a new deal.
Last season, the Cowboys traded for Cooper midway through the season. Dallas surrendered a first-round pick in the trade—showing how highly they thought of Cooper.
With Cooper's arrival, the Cowboys passing offense and Dak Prescott drastically improved. Adding Cooper to the offense provided a much-needed spark through the air.
Without Cooper, Prescott had 1,660 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions in the first eight games. Then, with Cooper, Prescott had 2,225 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions in the final eight games.
The difference that Cooper made in 2018 showed Dallas just how valuable he was to the team moving forward. Although, the team also needs to worry about signing Prescott and Elliott long-term.
As for Prescott and Cooper, they are both entering the final years of their rookie deals in 2019. Therefore, the Cowboys see it as a key focus of theirs to re-sign them before Elliott.
The Cowboys have begun their training camp on Friday but Elliott is nowhere to be found. This leaves Dallas in a predicament on who they want to pay and when. As for Cooper, it seems as if Dallas is making him a priority to get signed long-term.
