It's barely been 24 hours since the Dallas Cowboys inked one of their young offensive building blocks to a record contract extension. Just because Ezekiel Elliott's deal is finally done, though, hardly means management's work is finished. Where does the front office's attention turn now that Dallas' superstar running back is locked up for foreseeable future? To Dak Prescott, who's been seeking a re-negotiated contract of his own all offseason.

Cowboys executive vice president Steven Jones reiterated on Thursday just how much Prescott means to the team's present and future, insisting the fourth-year quarterback will be playing in Dallas for “many, many years to come.”

“I just can’t imagine Dak doesn’t know what we think of him,” Jones said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “We’re trying to put the best team around him. We want him to win Super Bowls. He’s going to be the quarterback around here for many, many years to come.”

Prescott is due just over $2 million this season before becoming a free agent next spring. He turned down a deal offering him $30 million annually last month, and the mega extensions of St. Louis Rams quarterback Jared Goff and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz have only driven up his price tag.

Still, Prescott seems prepared to play the regular season as negotiations continue.

“I mean, obviously I want to see it done,” he said. “To put a timeframe on it, I think I’ve said this before, I’m not going to do that. At this point, my focus is all on the Giants, the Giants defense, what this team needs to do to win the game, and then next week we’ll go to the next opponent.”

Prescott and the Cowboys open the 2019 season on Sunday against the New York Giants.
