If you're expecting the Dallas Cowboys to go above and beyond to extend Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper, you are probably going to be disappointed.
Speaking on KTCK-AM 1310, Cowboys president Stephen Jones said that the team is going to be careful about how they allocate their funds, even when it comes to their important skill players:

But at the same time, we don’t want to do things that are out of line because we can’t afford to be that way. When we save money, whether it’s with Dak, whether it’s with Zeke, whether it’s with Amari, it’s not saving Jerry and I a dollar. It’s just money that’s going to another player.”
Dallas already extended defensive lineman DeMarcus Lawrence this offseason, and with cornerback Byron Jones and offensive lineman La'el Collins coming up for free agency after this coming season, not to mention the fact that linebacker Jaylon Smith will be up for a new deal soon, the Cowboys obviously have to do some number-crunching.
So, you can certainly understand why Dallas and Elliott are currently embroiled in a contract standoff, which has led to Elliott holding out of training camp with no resolution in sight.
The Cowboys won 10 games and captured the NFC East division title this past season. They then went on to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs before falling to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round a week later.
