Although there has not been much progress made on the looming deals of several key players on the Dallas Cowboys offense, team owner Jerry Jones does not appear to be phased by all the concern. Quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Ezekiel Elliott, and wide receiver Amari Cooper are all looking for lucrative, long-term extensions. According to ESPN's Todd Archer, Jones does not feel the need to abide by any timeframe:
“You just know like so many things it’ll happen. It’ll happen,” Jones said. “There literally is no concern on my part at all about any timeframe. That’ll happen. The results are too good for them and too good for the Cowboys. Think about it a minute. The results are too good for them and too good for the Cowboys. That always happens when it’s good for both (sides).”
While Jones' comments may be an attempt to downplay any concern about the ongoing contract negotiations, there have not been many positives to take away from the situation. Elliott has been the most notable holdout in Cowboys' training camp and there are no signs of his looming return.
Article Continues BelowJones also somewhat fanned the flames of his absence by suggesting that Dallas did not need a rushing champion to win a Super Bowl despite their own franchise history proving otherwise. Elliott's absence would only further put the onus on Prescott and Cooper to perform at a much higher level.
The Cowboys have not been shy about expressing their high expectations for the 2019 NFL season, however, it remains to be seen whether or not they will be at full strength offensively with Elliott in the mix.
