The Dallas Cowboys finished the week by having a team meeting that went beyond the horizons of football. In response to the recent events surrounding the death of George Floyd, Mike McCarthy and Dallas players engaged in meetings on racial justice, per Sports Illustrated's Mike Fisher:
“The direction this week from coach Mike McCarthy,” writes my friend Laura Okmin of FOX Sports, who was first to reveal the news of the meeting, “has been focusing on conversations about George Floyd, racism, personal experiences and how to go from ‘Protest to Progress.”'
Similar to other teams, the Cowboys have put football on the backburner for the time being. Instead of conducting usual team meetings, McCarthy is informing players to speak their minds on the recent events.
Besides McCarthy, some of the players that had emotional messages for the team were Gerald McCoy and Jaylon Smith. On the other hand, veteran Sean Lee also chose to speak on the issues at hand.
At first, McCarthy chose to speak to Cowboys' players and allow players to speak in smaller groups. Then, he proceeded to move the conversation to the entire team, giving everyone a chance to unite together.
Within the team-wide session, McCarthy left a powerful message for his players:
“This moment is so important – let’s stay in it. Let’s grow from it. Legacies can be defined by how we’ll move forward.”
It's important for sports teams and the players to use their platforms to combat the racial issues plaguing the country right now. While the Cowboys can't create change alone, uniting together to listen to those that have experienced racial inequality can be a step in the right direction.
