The expectation heading into Week 1 was that Dak Prescott would fill in the Cowboys‘ starting quarterback spot only until Tony Romo made his return. Instead, he's excelled at such a high level that many pundits believe Dak should remain Dallas' QB1, even with a healthy Romo.

The media is certainly driving this “quarterback controversy,” but owner Jerry Jones only added fuel to the fire with his responses to questions on the subject. Initially, he stated that Romo will start once his health and conditioning are in order. But now, he's more vague with his wording, saying Dallas “will play this thing out” with regard to who will start.

Prescott has clearly shined while leading the Cowboys to a 4-1 record, but in his mind, Tony Romo is still Dallas' starting quarterback. From ESPN's Todd Archer:

“This is Tony’s team,” Prescott said. “I knew that going into the situation. I think everybody knew that. I’m just trying to do the best I can to give my team a chance to win week in and week out.”

Prescott has set a rookie record by not throwing an interception in his first 155 passing attempts. That will only grow further, unless his first pass against the Packers this weekend is a pick.

Of course, Prescott would love to remain in this role, but he's primarily concerned with the team continuing to win:

“It’s definitely not a distraction to me,” said Prescott, who added that he wants to play but will be happy if the Cowboys continue to win. “That’s not my call. It doesn’t have anything to do with me. My job is to come in here, like I say, give these guys a chance to win, get better each and every day at practice and that’s all I focus on.”

He's correct, it's not his call. But, if he continues to win and efficiently run the offense, it's going to be hard for those decision-makers to take Dak off the field.
