John Elway has been searching for ways to bring the Denver Broncos back to being a contender in the NFL. Has the Hall of Fame quarterback done enough to finally say the Broncos are officially back?
According to Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated, the Broncos are among a few teams who are “stuck in neutral.” In his article, Orr reasons that Vic Fangio will rally the troops in Denver, but Joe Flacco is going to prevent the team from reaching its potential.
This offseason, the Broncos made a move to acquire Flacco from the Baltimore Ravens. Elway has searched long and far for a quarterback to replace Peyton Manning since Peyton retired in 2015.
Since then, Brock Osweiler, Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch, and most recently, Case Keenum have held the quarterback position. None of those guys were good enough to lead the team to success. As a result, none of them remain on the roster.
Orr then made the judgment that the Broncos would falter with Flacco but could end up surprising people if Drew Lock was thrust into the offense and provided a spark. Lock was Denver's second-round pick, after being projected as a first-round player for the majority of the draft process.
Nonetheless, it's tough to see the Broncos ending their three-year playoff drought in the top-heavy AFC West. The Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs have better rosters on paper and are more proven. Therefore, until the Broncos prove everyone wrong, Denver will be considered a team that is stuck in mediocrity.
