The Denver Broncos have a new starting quarterback — key word, starting. Despite acquiring former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco via trade this offseason, the Broncos still went ahead and selected another signal caller in the early stages of the 2019 NFL Draft while it won't have an effect on the veteran newcomer it turns out.
While it was always presumed that Flacco would step right in en route to becoming the Broncos starting quarterback, Denver head coach Vic Fangio has since confirmed such a notion.
“We’ve got open competition after [Flacco],” Fangio recently said, via the team's official website. “We’ll randomly play those guys with the twos and the threes when we do our reps.”
With the Broncos currently employing four signal callers in total, including soon-to-be rookie and former Missouri Tigers quarterback Drew Lock, only Flacco will receive first team repetitions at this time.
“At quarterback, Joe Flacco will take all of the repetitions with the first team, Fangio said. After that, Fangio expects Kevin Hogan, Drew Lock and Brett Rypien to be mixed in randomly,” reads the team's official statement regarding the matter.
Unfortunately for Flacco, Vangio and the rest of the Broncos, Denver still plays in the AFC West division. Although the Broncos have certainly improved this offseason, so have both the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers. On the other hand, the Kansas City Chiefs have not encountered a memorable offseason, though the surging franchise may still be the best team in the AFC West division in 2019-20.
