The Seattle Seahawks weren't the only that team called the Denver Broncos about trading up to No. 10 in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. According to NBC Sports' Peter King, Broncos general manager John Elways said that his team also had trade discussions with the New York Giants and general manager Dave Gettleman concerning the tenth overall pick of the draft.
“My big question to Gettleman in the wake of the weekend centered around taking Duke quarterback Daniel Jones at six. (Isn’t that the question on every Giants fan’s brain right now?) Actually, I had a couple of questions. That was the first, and then, why was Gettleman trying to trade with Denver at 10—which John Elway told me in Denver after the first round.”
The Giants, of course, made perhaps the most controversial choice of the entire draft by taking Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick. They then selected Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence at No. 17. New York's goal with the tenth pick, if it had been acquired from Denver, is unclear, but conventional wisdom says the team likely would have selected Jones after taking an objectively superior prospect, like Kentucky pass-rusher Josh Allen, at No. 6.
The Broncos, meanwhile, ended up sending the tenth pick to the Seahawks in exchange for No. 20, a second-rounder, and a 2020 fifth-rounder. They used their first-round choice on explosive Iowa tight end Noah Fant, and the second-round pick they received from Seattle to move up to No. 42 and select Missouri quarterback Drew Lock, a prospect Elway and company targeted during the pre-draft process.
