John Elway and Peyton Manning: two of the greatest to ever touch the center's ass in the National Football League filled up chunks of Denver Broncos quarterback history. It's why the current QB situation a mile high is so unsettling.
Sure, Case Keenum has arrived but apparently, he's not enough. Elway proclaims that he may take a quarterback in the five-hole at next month's 2018 NFL Draft and better yet, he probably won't decide until draft day. He revealed this and more to ESPN's Adam Schefter on his podcast at the owners' meetings.
When asked specifically about a potential quarterback at No. 5, Elway didn't close off any avenues.
“That'll be wide open,” Elway said. ” … I'm betting we won't know what direction we're going to go until probably the day of [the first round] or the day before.”
A lot changed for Denver's situation with one huge announcement a few weeks ago. When the New York Jets traded three second-round selections to move from six to three, it added one more organization ahead of Denver desperately needing a franchise game-changing thrower.
With the New York Giants at No. 2 and the Cleveland Browns at No. 1 and 4, Elway could be looking at drafting the third quarterback off the board, meaning one of the top three in Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Josh Rosen.
What the Giants do at No. 2—in passing on a QB or not, or trading down while allowing a QB-hungry squad to move up—will greatly impact Elway's choice.
“It's going to change from time to time; we'll look at all the different scenarios,” Elway said. ” … We'll have to do that when we set our board, set the quarterback position, in order, where we would have them and go through the scenarios.”
Keenum, 30, is coming off a career year, throwing for 3,547 yards and 22 touchdowns in 14 games started. But his presence alone shouldn't be enough.
It's now obviously clear if one of the quarterbacks John Elway loves is at No. 5, he'll scoop him up. It's the way it should be.
