Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is the leading candidate to land the Denver Broncos' head-coaching job, according to Ryan Witkowski of 610Sports.com.

Fangio has been the Bears' defensive coordinator since 2015 and actually interviewed for Chicago's head-coaching vacancy last year, but lost out to Matt Nagy.

He has led the Bears to the third-ranked defense in the league, which is the biggest reason why Chicago won 12 games and captured the NFC North title this season.

Fangio has been around the block a few times.

In addition to the Bears, he has served as a defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers, with his first NFL job coming as the New Orleans Saints' linebackers coach all the way back in 1986.

The Broncos are in need of a head coach after firing Vance Joseph this week. Denver went just 6-10 this year after winning just five games in 2017, marking the first time the franchise has posted back-to-back losing seasons since 1972, a truly incredible feat.

The Broncos have missed the playoffs three straight seasons after making five consecutive postseason appearances from 2011 through 2015, including a pair of Super Bowl appearance and a Super Bowl victory during the 2015-16 campaign.

Denver actually got off to a 2-0 start this season but then proceeded to lose four straight games. The Broncos briefly vaulted themselves back into playoff contention after reeling off three consecutive victories from Nov. 18 through Dec. 2, but they then lost four straight games to end their season. The Broncos failed to score 20 points in each of those four losses.
