In the weeks leading up to the 2018 NFL Draft, there hasn't been a clear plan laid out for what the Denver Broncos aim to do with the fifth overall pick. General manager John Elway has voiced that he is open to all options on the table that could help improve the franchise for the long haul.
However, Elway recently stated that the team could possibly take a quarterback at the selection despite the free agent signing of Case Keenum to a two-year, $36 million deal. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Broncos have lined up a workout with former USC quarterback Sam Darnold this week.
Big week for USC QB Sam Darnold. He's at the Browns facility tomorrow and, as we mentioned a while ago, he'll work out for the Broncos in LA on Friday.

Although Darnold could be the first overall selection by the Cleveland Browns, the Broncos want to get a closer look at a possible option at their pick if he's available. There has been some growing chatter that the Browns could be leaning toward taking former Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen at the top pick in the draft.
Darnold has demonstrated to have much promise to develop in a franchise quarterback at the next level with all the necessary skill set and mental makeup that could translate well in the NFL Denver could bring him in as the backup and Keenum's eventual replacement when the team feels he is ready to take the reigns over as the next cornerstone player under center.
The Broncos have also constructed a sound roster that has two proven wide receivers in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders that could help him transition in a quicker manner to the NFL game. The team also possesses one of the stoutest defensive units in the league that could ease some of the pressure off him to carry the team offensively.
Denver has struggled to find a solution at quarterback since Peyton Manning retired, which has prevented the franchise from becoming a legitimate playoff contender despite having the other pieces in place to do so.
If anything, the workout with Darnold signals that the front office wants to find a long-term answer at the position.
