The New York Giants sent shockwaves throughout the NFL when they started fielding offers for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Despite being one of the best players in the league, it seems the Giants have had some trouble with finding a team that is willing to meet their lucrative asking price due to the alleged “baggage” he carries.
Beckham's boisterous personality on and off the field has landed him in hot water at times. Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis said during an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd that he is concerned that his actions are a “cry for help”:
“Where there’s no God, there’s chaos,” Lewis said. “Odell has removed God from his life. This is a kid who grew up under the covenant of who God really is. And everything that he’s doing, he’s crying out for help.”
Lewis added that he felt an obligation to reach out to Beckham.
“We have a lot of people reporting about it, but it’s always been the duty of elders to go back to help him,” Lewis said. “So that’s why I raised my hand. And I told him, ‘I’m here [for] whatever you need.'”
It is undoubtedly encouraging to see a former NFL star looking to help out in any way that he can. However, it is still unclear as to what exactly Beckham has done that would require such assistance.
Unlike Lewis, Beckham has never been involved in any instances with the law. Although his antics have been dubbed as a distraction by some, there is no arguing that he is still one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Regardless, it will be interesting to see whether or not the Giants have planned their long-term future with Beckham in mind.
