New York Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has ventured through the offseason on the final year of his rookie contract without any true progress toward a lucrative extension.
Despite that, Beckham Jr. continues to participate in all team activities and workouts without any consideration of holding out, unlike many of his peers in similar situations who have chosen to do so.
Former Giants great Tiki Barber recently weighed in on the situation, stating that he believes that the 25-year-old has the “biggest gripe” of the star players holding out this offseason. (h/t Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com)
“I think Odell is putting the right image out right now. It’s interesting with all the holdouts – Aaron Donald, Julio Jones, Khalil Mack – Odell has maybe the biggest gripe of all of them,” Barber said. “Because he was drafted outside the top 10, his fifth-year option is $8.5 million as opposed to $16 (million). He deserved to be paid like that.”
With his broken foot aside, Beckham Jr. has completely blown past the expectations that were laid before him through his first four years in the league. He has quickly developed into a bonafide superstar that is producing at a Hall of Fame pace to begin his career.
Beckham Jr. has become the backbone of the Giants offense behind his dependable play on the field as the primary receiving option in the passing game, but that is yet to equate to him getting a new deal that would possibly make him the highest-paid wide receiver in the league.
It may just be a matter of time before Beckham Jr. has a new extension in place that will keep the star wideout in New York for the long haul.
