The Green Bay Packers knew they needed to make some changes this offseason so they decided to move on from Ted Thompson while hiring Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager.
Gutekunst has the power over the player personnel decisions, but there is one thing he won't be deciding on: if Mike McCarthy should be fired.
Team president Mike Murphy has decided to keep that power for himself and it actually caught Gutekunst off-guard a bit not having that power.

“I needed some time to kind of process it. I think the thing to me that made it OK with me was the people. The relationships I already had with Mark [Murphy] and Mike McCarthy and Russ Ball. I think that's what made it OK and made it easier for me. But it was certainly something I hadn't seen or been a part of in my professional career.”
Chances are, isn't going to be a decision that is going to be even discussed as long as Aaron Rodgers is in town because this team will be a contender, but if they keep falling short in the playoffs, there is a chance that a change will need to be made, and that will fall on the shoulders of Mike Murphy.
If the relationship continues to be good between Murphy and Gutekunst, there could be a chance that he is still contacted before a decision is made.
