In a rather surprising move, the Green Bay Packers have released backup quarterback DeShone Kizer, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Kizer was expected by most to be the Packers' No. 2 quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers heading into 2019, but Green Bay seems to be rolling with Tim Boyle, who outplayed Kizer in the preseason.

The Packers initially acquired Kizer from the Cleveland Browns in March 2018, sending safety Damarious Randall to the Browns in exchange.

Kizer completed 20 of the 42 passes he threw for Green Bay last year, throwing a couple of interceptions.

This is just the latest development in what has been a very disappointing NFL career for Kizer, who was originally selected by the Browns in the second round (52nd pick overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Notre Dame product started 15 games for Cleveland during his rookie campaign and was an abject disaster, throwing for 2,894 yards, 11 touchdowns, and a league-worst 22 interceptions while completing just 53.6 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 60.5.

However, based on his talent and his collegiate success, there was some hope that Kizer could eventually develop into a serviceable NFL quarterback, which was why the Packers took a chance on the 23-year-old last offseason.

Some felt that Kizer could potentially be Rodgers' successor, but, obviously, the production never matched the expectations.

Green Bay is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which it went just 6-9-1 and missed the playoffs, marking the first time since 2006 that the Packers failed to qualify for the postseason in back-to-back years.
