With the offseason about to ramp up, one of the biggest focuses is on NFL free agency. This season could be one of the most active in recent years with plenty of marquee guys available. One of the teams that could be very vigorous when free agency kicks off is the Green Bay Packers.
According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, general manager Brian Gutekunst said the Packers want to be “really active” in free agency this offseason.
With new head coach Matt LaFleur, this comes as no surprise. Most new head coaches like to shape or shift their roster to what they feel is necessary to better the roster. An offensive guy like LaFleur would also like to build his offense with guys who fit his system.
The Packers have plenty of needs—especially on the defensive side of the ball. The good news is, there are plenty of big-name guys in free agency that Green Bay can inquire about during free agency.
Article Continues BelowLast offseason, the team made a splash signing, agreeing to a three-year, $30 million deal withJimmy Graham. The move didn't go as expected, as Graham never really got going in the offense. With LaFleur steering the ship, things could likely be different for Graham now.
The Packers have a couple of veterans in Clay Matthews and Randall Cobb who could hit the market. Matthews—especially—will need to be replaced by an edge rusher this offseason if he is let go.
Green Bay traded Haha Clinton-Dix before the trade deadline in 2018, leaving a void in the backend of the secondary. Free agency could be the way to go for multiple positions.
So don't be surprised if the Packers are one of the more active teams in free agency this year—which is unlike themselves as they usually build solely through the draft.
